Friday October 3rd, 2008, 7pm, Popcorn and Politics Film Series: "The Burmese Harp" (1956). Kon Ichikawa's lyrical anti-war statement tells the story of a Japanese soldier in Burma at the close of World War Two who is sent on a mission by his Captain to inform another unit of the Japanese surrender and to convince them to stop fighting. Along the way the soldier witnesses the ravaged land, bodies, and souls of his country and undergoes a spiritual transformation. With stunning black and white cinematography and haunting music this classic is a universal testament not only to the madness that prevailed in the South Pacific, but to the unspeakable horror of all war. In Japanese with English subtitles. 116 minutes. Projected on the big screen at the LEPOCO Peace Center. (from lepoco.org)
